WhatsApp Business groups are not personal WhatsApp groups
WhatsApp Business groups are groups a business creates on its own Cloud API number through Meta's Groups API. They are not personal WhatsApp groups: Tyxter does not connect to, read, join, import or mirror groups created in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app.
Beta. This page explains what a WhatsApp Business group is and what it is not. It does not list what Tyxter offers today: the WhatsApp Business groups API reference is the one place where availability is kept current.
The two features share a name and a chat screen and little else. Facts marked (heard) come from Meta's Groups API documentation, read on 2026-10-04, and have not yet been observed on a live group through Tyxter. Facts marked (assumed) are Tyxter's reading where Meta's documentation is silent; they will be corrected when Meta or a live group contradicts them.
How they differ
| WhatsApp Business groups | Personal WhatsApp groups | |
|---|---|---|
| Created by | A business, through Meta's Groups API, on its own Cloud API number | Any person, in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app |
| Who can have one | An Official Business Account on a Cloud API number; a number on the WhatsApp Business app cannot (heard) | Anyone with WhatsApp |
| Size | Up to 8 participants per group (heard); whether the business number counts toward the 8 is not documented | Much larger groups (WhatsApp Help Center) |
| Groups per number | Up to 10,000 per business phone number (heard) | — |
| How people join | Only by opening an invite link the business shares; the business cannot add anyone, and a removed participant cannot rejoin through the link (heard) | Admins add members directly or share a link |
| Existing groups | Cannot be adopted: create a new group and invite the people again (assumed: Meta's documentation shows no import or conversion path) | Stay where they are |
| Content Meta supports | Text, media, templates and pinned messages; no calls, interactive messages, commerce messages, authentication templates, view-once, disappearing, edited or deleted messages (heard) | The full consumer feature set |
| Tyxter | The only kind of group Tyxter works with; the API reference lists what is available today | Never: Tyxter cannot read, join, import, mirror or convert one |
| Not to be confused with | A WhatsApp Community, an announcement group, a Tyxter audience or a broadcast batch |
The content row describes what Meta supports inside a WhatsApp Business group, not what Tyxter can send today.
What you might be trying to do
Connect my existing groups
You cannot. Tyxter does not connect to, read or import a group created in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, and an existing group cannot be turned into a WhatsApp Business group (assumed: Meta's documentation shows no import or conversion path). The path is a new WhatsApp Business group created on an eligible Cloud API number, with each person invited again through its invite link. The API reference says whether that is available through Tyxter today.
If an API call answered 422 personal_whatsapp_group_not_supported, the value passed as the group id in the request path was a personal group's invite link (from chat.whatsapp.com, percent-encoded into the path, as the SDK does) or an app-style group id ending in @g.us. An invite link pasted into the path unencoded contains slashes and gets 404 route_not_found instead. Neither identifies a WhatsApp Business group, and Tyxter cannot look one up, connect to it or convert it; use the id of a WhatsApp Business group Tyxter created.
Add the business number to a customer's group
You cannot. A WhatsApp Business group is created by the business itself, through the API (heard), so a business number does not join a group someone else created (assumed: Meta's documentation describes no way to do so).
Add members by phone number
You cannot. The business cannot add anyone to a WhatsApp Business group; each person joins by opening the group's invite link, which the business shares with them (heard). A person removed from the group cannot rejoin through that link (heard).
Have more than 8 people in one group
You cannot. Meta caps a WhatsApp Business group at 8 participants (heard), and Tyxter does not raise or work around that cap. Whether the business number itself counts toward the 8 is not documented. To reach more people at once, see the next answer.
Message many people at once
That is a broadcast, not a group. A Tyxter broadcast batch, optionally targeting a saved audience, sends a separate 1:1 message to each recipient: each person gets their own chat with your number, and recipients never see each other.
Create a community or an announcement group
Not offered. Tyxter does not create WhatsApp Communities or announcement groups, and a WhatsApp Business group is neither (assumed: Meta's Groups API documentation describes neither). For one-way announcements to many people, use a broadcast batch.
